Alanya stands as one of the Turkish Mediterranean’s most vibrant beach resort cities, situated on a small peninsula that juts into the sea below the Taurus Mountains. It held a strategic position for successive empires through its history, stretching from the Ptolemaic to Ottoman periods, but much of the city’s architecture was built by the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm during the Middle Ages.
Of the Seljuk architectural gems that remain, the fortress complex that overlooks the city to the south is perhaps the most impressive, with some beautiful ruins that include the Seljuk castle and red-roofed houses tumbling down its hillside. Also worth visiting is the Kızıl Kule, or “Red Tower”, considered Alanya’s architectural symbol, as well as the Tersane shipyard, whose restored stone arches remain as the only Seljuk-built shipyard that still stands in Turkey today.
Alanya’s historical riches combine with an enviable Mediterranean climate that lure a large number of visitors to its shores every year. You can stroll along the waterfront, stopping at cafes and restaurants to sample the local seafood, or take a boat cruise along Alanya’s beautiful coastline to explore its caves. Alanya also has a lively nightlife, with plenty of bars and clubs where you can party into the early hours.
Our selection of Alanya shore excursions allow you to experience this beautiful part of the Turkish Mediterranean coastline while soaking up its intriguing history.
