Ports: Argostoli Cruise Port
Made famous in the film “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, picturesque Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands. Although it was subjected to heavy bombing during World War II and devastated by an earthquake in 1953, it retains a distinct charm and cultural heritage that displays Greek, Venetian, Roman and Byzantine influences.
Cruise ships dock at the new port in Argostoli, which is situated a 10 to 15-minute stroll from the town center. As there is only one berth, sometimes ships tender passengers directly to the old harbor in the center of Argostoli.
Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia and nestles on a sheltered inlet on the southern coast. This busy port is the main commercial hub of the island, clustered with supermarkets and specialty shops catering to tourists. Look for locally crafted pralines (mandoles), quince paste and leather goods, as well as both red and white Kefalonian wine.
Don’t miss a visit to the 1,600-year-old St. George Castle that lies in the scenic Livatho Valley to the south of Argostoli or Assos Castle that lies to the north. This European Heritage Site is the largest castle on Kefalonia, with immense walls, stone tunnels and grand bastions to explore.
Take a boat tour along the waters of Lake Melissani to explore the photogenic Melissani Cave, known as the “Cave of the Nymphs” in Greek mythology. Then venture into the magnificent Drogarati Cave that is believed to be more than 100 million years old and is adorned with impressive stalagmites and stalactites.
Hikers can hit the trails of Mount Ainos National Park, which is swathed with endemic Abies Cephalonica firs. Tackle the challenging climb to the highest peak of Megas Soros, come face-to-face with semi-wild horses and soak up the spectacular views that the national park offers across Kefalonia.
