Visiting: Dervish Dede Efendi House in Sultanahmet for The Whirling Dervishes
Duration: 1 hours
Istanbul Whirling Dervishes hosts regular Sufi music concerts and whirling dervish performances at the Dervish Dede Efendi House in Sultanahmet.
The Whirling Dervishes took their name from Jelaleddin Rumi (1207-1273), the mystical poet and great Sufi master, called Mevlana (our leader) by his disciples. Sufis seek a close relationship with God, and for Mevlana it was through chants, prayers, music and a whirling dance.
The Istanbul Whirling Dervishes programme starts with an introduction speech about Rumi, followed by Sufi Music and the 4-salam whirling dervish ceremony, giving life to 800 years tradition on the stage with their determination and faith for being a lifelong follower of Mevlevi tradition. Guests are welcome to ask questions and talk to the musicians and dervishes after the ceremony.
The Istanbul Whirling Dervishes whirling dervish ceremony is performed every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 7.30pm at the Dervish Dede Efendi House in Sultanahmet. The venue has capacity for 100 and prior reservations are recommended.
