As you exit Izmir Harbour, please locate your professional local guide who will be holding a name card for easy recognition. Today you will be visiting some of antiquities greatest sites which date back to the 6th century BC.
We begin at one of the largest ancient Roman Cities of its time, Ephesus, once home to more than 200,000 people. Beautifully preserved, you can wander around the Temple of Hadrian, the Odeon, and along the main road that leads to the impressive Celsius Library. There is also the option to visit the Terraced Houses of Ephesus which has an extra entrance fee of 15 USD per person.
Miletos dates back to around the 6th century BC and was once one of the greatest cities of its time with multiple harbours. An increase in sedimentation over the years has complicated archaeological excavations but there are many ruins still impressively intact today, including the Delphinion, the Amphitheatre and the Bath of Faustina. The ancient city is also mentioned in the New Testament with the Apostle Paul passing through on one of his journeys.
Home to the Temple of Apollo, one of the most important of its time, Didyma attracted people from far and wide to consult their fortunes. The temple took almost 200 years to build and during the Byzantine era a church was built upon its foundations, resulting in the mix of religious architectural styles seen today.
Don't miss a chance to visit the Terrace Houses section which is located inside the Ancient Ruins of Ephesus and has an extra entrance fee of 15 USD per person. Its oldest building, "The houses of the rich Romans", dates back to the 1st century BC and offers an intriguing insight into the lifestyle of the wealthy during this period, with rich frescoes and mosaics. Be aware that there are over 100 stairs so we do not recommend it for people with physical disabilities. It takes a minimum of 30 minutes to visit.
Lunch is not included in the cost of the tour. We will suggest options for local Turkish restaurants and provide ample time for you to have a sit-down lunch.
