Saklikent Gorge & Ancient City of Xanthos

Visiting: Saklıkent Gorge Nature Park, Xanthos

Duration: 10 hours

If you are interested in culture and history and a nature lover, you will appreciate a day at Saklıkent Gorge Nature Park. Your guide will pick you up from KaÅŸ and drive about 40 minutes to Saklıkent Gorge.

Saklikent Canyon is the longest canyon in Turkey and the second-longest in Europe. Once inside, you will reach the Ulupinar Springs where water bubbles up under great force from the base of the cliffs and you wade across the stream into the gorge to begin your walk. There is lot of healing clay which has a rejuvenating effect in the gorge. Keep walking until you get to penetrate into the heart of the mountains and enjoy the cool temperature coming from the rocks preventing you from the heat outside. There are small cafés placed inside the gorge where you can get food and cold drinks kept iced cold in the waters of the river. Relax on wooden platforms suspended just a foot or two above the river furnished with Turkish rugs and comfortable cushions in the shade in which they serve freshly-caught trout. It is such a delight to be able to stop in one of these small cafes and enjoy being surrounded by very magnificent scenery of the canyon.

Remember the best time to visit is  the canyon is in Summer when it is walkable after most of the snow from the Taurus Mountains has melted and passed through the gorge on its way to the Xanthos River.

After your adventure in the gorge, our guide will drive you to visit the Ancient city of Xanthos.

Xanthos, the first and largest capital of the republic in the world and of the Lycian League. Our professional guide will tell you the story of the freedom loving people in this Unesco World Heritage Site. Xanthos has it all, well-preserved ruins and monumental tombs, plus naturally beautiful scenery. Look out for "Harpy Tomb", named after the four female-headed birds at the corners of each side carrying small figures that may represent the souls of the dead, and "Nereid Monument” which derived its name from the Nereids, sea-nymphs whose statues were placed between the columns of this monumental tomb. Both of these tombs belong to the outstanding works of the Ionian culture.

After finishing from Xanthos ,we will drive you back to Kas. Along the way from Xanthos, you will see many cute little villages and we can stop for a tea break at one of these typical Turkish tea shops. Then you can relax in our luxurious vehicle until getting dropped off at your port of call.
